Science

Intent

Our curriculum will give children:

  • The ability to think independently and raise questions about working scientifically and the knowledge and skills that it brings.
  • Confidence and competence in the full range of practical skills.
  • Excellent scientific knowledge and understanding which is demonstrated in written and verbal explanations.
  • Scientific enquiry skills to be embedded in each topic throughout the school to allow the children to build upon prior knowledge.
  • The ability to undertake practical work in a variety of contexts.
  • A clear understanding of the jobs available from science specialisms.

Implementation

Our curriculum will be experienced through:

  • A sequence of lessons for each subject, which carefully plans for progression and depth.
  • Through memorable experiences, and stages that allow pupils to engage in, develop, innovate and express their learning.
  • Knowledge organisers which outline knowledge (including vocabulary) which all pupils need to learn.
  • Planning differentiated by year group, need, outcome or activity.
  • Challenging questions for pupils to apply their learning, including ‘I wonder …’ and ‘Flashbacks’
  • Trips and visits from experts who enhance the learning experience and give them examples of possible jobs in science.
  • Investigative learning including exciting experiments and practical work.
  • Cross curricular consolidation and links with other projects and subjects to deepen the learning.

Impact

Our curriculum will give the pupils:

  • A strong understanding of scientific vocabulary.
  • A strong understanding of the world around them acquiring specific skills and knowledge.
  • An understanding and tolerance of diversity in our community and the world.
  • An understanding of the uses and implications of Science, today and for the future.
  • Confidence in being resilient, discussing their learning and raising questions.
  • A range of skills, to develop and use, including observations, planning and investigations.
  • Learning opportunities to make good or better progress.
