Maths

Intent

Our curriculum will give children:

  • An understanding of the important concepts and an ability to make connections within mathematics.
  • A broad range of skills in using and applying mathematics.
  • Fluent knowledge and recall of number facts and the number system.
  • Fluency in performing written and metal calculations.
  • The ability to show initiative in solving problems in a wide range of contexts, to reason, generalise and make sense of solutions.
  • The ability to think independently, persevere when faced with new challenges and to work with others to succeed.
  • To embrace the value of learning from mistakes.
  • A wide range of mathematics vocabulary.

Implementation

Our curriculum will be experienced through:

  • Our long-term planning is based on White Rose Maths Mixed Age Planning.
  • Planning is differentiated by year group and need in our mixed age classes.
  • Purposeful opportunities for mathematics are planned.
  • High quality resources support children’s understanding of maths at all stages.
  • The use of resources to support visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learners.
  • Specific vocabulary teaching.
  • Cross-curricular consolidation and links with other subjects and through our driver projects.
  • Children have regular opportunities to master the curriculum through deeper level learning.
  • Lessons consistent of fluency, reasoning and problem solving.
  • Where needed, gaps are identified and filled through catch-up sessions and tutoring.

Impact

Our curriculum will create:

  • Learning opportunities to make good or better progress.
  • Confident, resilient learners who can persevere when faced with problems.
  • An understanding and tolerance of diversity in our community and the world.
  • Rich vocabulary and strong understanding of mathematics.
  • Children with a love for mathematics.
  • Children understand the benefits of maths in other areas and are ready for the next stage of their education.
  • An understanding of the uses and implementation of Maths, today and for the future.
